Introduction
Rewarding students is a core part of building motivation, reinforcing positive behavior, and supporting long-term academic progress. Gamably makes this simple and flexible by allowing teachers to give out currency, XP, items, and badges — individually or in combination — to create a powerful classroom reward system. In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to distribute rewards in Gamably, step-by-step, and you’ll also find classroom-tested ideas for when to use each type of reward. Whether you use PBIS, gamified instruction, or simply want a fun way to boost engagement, this tutorial will help you get the most out of Gamably’s reward system.
Why Rewarding Students Matters
A well-designed reward system helps students stay consistent, take ownership of their progress, and feel recognized for their effort. Rewards work best when they are:
- Clear and consistent
- Connected to expected behaviors
- Used to reinforce academic progress
- Part of a bigger classroom routine
- Motivating rather than transactional
Gamably allows you to build a reward system that fits the culture of your classroom, whether you’re supporting PBIS, encouraging daily habits, or designing a full gamified adventure.
How to Distribute Rewards in Gamably (Step-by-Step)
Step 1 — Open the Distribute Rewards Page
Select the Distribute Rewards button located on the left-hand navigation menu.

Step 2 — Customize the Reward Details
Insert the title of the reward and any other information you want Players to see. Including reasoning is vital to any PBIS programs you may have in place.

Step 3 — Select Students or Groups
You can either choose to distribute to Players or to Team Totals. Once on the appropriate interface then you can choose the Players or Teams to distribute to. You can sort, filter, select multiple, select all, or even deselect all if you need to.

Step 4 — Choose Your Reward Type and Amount
The distributable rewards you can select from Currency, XP, Items, and/or Badges. You can distribute all of these rewards at once or one at a time, it’s up to you. Leaving a field blank will then not distribute that reward. You can change the rewards of individual Players or Teams next.

Step 5 — Review/Edit Reward
Your screen will change into a Review page for your distribution. Confirm that the quantities and types of rewards are as intended or edit individual rewards for certain Players or Teams here. For example if one student when above and beyond or one Team didn’t have quite the behavior of the rest you can manipulate those individual rewards by editing on this page. You can edit by clicking the pencil icon on the top right of each Player or Team. Once finished Click the “Disitribute Rewards” button.

Step 6 — Distribute the Reward
You’ll receive this pop-up message asking you to confirm (there is no going back after this)!

After confirmation and potentially some purple box loading (don’t refresh the page during this time), you’ll see a confirmation message. You did it!

Understanding the Reward Types (and When to Distribute Them)
Currency
Currency is ideal for short-term incentives and ongoing classroom participation.
Good reasons to give currency:
- PBIS points (respect, responsibility, kindness, etc.)
- Staying on task during lessons
- Completing in-class assignments
- Finishing warm-ups or bell-ringers
- Going above and beyond the minimum
- Weekly or daily classroom jobs
- Extra academic challenges
Students can spend currency in your classroom store, giving them constant motivation.
XP (Experience Points)
XP creates clear progression and leveling systems — perfect for long-term motivation.
Best uses for XP:
- Mastery of skills
- Completing learning pathway checkpoints
- Achieving personal growth goals
- Daily participation streaks
- Milestones in a unit
- Progress in digital or paper assignments
Items
Items can be digital collectibles or real classroom perks.
Ideas for classroom items:
- Homework passes
- Choose-a-seat privilege
- Bonus time on assignments
- Classroom job upgrades
- Special themed items tied to your classroom “world”
- power-ups, boosters, or collectibles for events and challenges
Badges
Badges represent permanent achievements students display proudly.
Great uses for badges:
- Character traits (Kindness, Leadership, Respect)
- Academic milestones (Unit Mastery, A+ Exam, Growth Award)
- SEL accomplishments
- Teamwork or collaboration
- Attendance badges
- School-wide participation events
- Special monthly or seasonal challenges
Tips for Making Distributing Rewards Meaningful
Use these ideas to ensure your reward system stays balanced and motivating:
- Use a mix of short-term (currency) and long-term (XP) rewards
- Give badges only for milestones or accomplishments
- Rotate the items in your classroom store to keep things fresh
- Avoid giving rewards only for easy tasks
- Combine rewards with clear, predictable expectations
- Use student progress data in Gamably to adjust reward frequencies
- Celebrate growth publicly when appropriate
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Distributing Rewards
Even a great reward system can stall if you’re not careful. Avoid:
- Over-rewarding and devaluing your points
- Giving the same reward too often
- Only rewarding high-performing students
- Using badges for trivial tasks
- Forgetting to connect rewards to clear behaviors
- Assuming all students are motivated by the same reward type
A consistent, well-balanced approach works best.
My Classroom Examples of Distributing Rewards
Example 1:
In my classroom students would earn XP every time students reach a checkpoint in their mastery goal on a learning pathway. Students level up every 1,000 XP and earn additional prizes as they level-up, beyond the bragging rights of the Level Leaderboard.
Example 2:
In my classroom students earn classroom currency for attendance, teamwork, participation and collaboration. Students spend it on items like a mystery prize, homework passes, and fun class privileges, and more
